I’m always on the lookout for fresh, inspiring photo locations as I drive around Santa Cruz. My car notebook is filled with little gems I’ve stumbled upon—unexpected backdrops that catch my eye because of their colors, textures, or unique character.
One of my favorites is a wall tucked behind Bay Photo in their parking lot. At first glance, it’s simple, but the faded, dusty turquoise paint, the yellow-framed window, and the tropical plants growing nearby create the perfect blend of color and texture. It’s the kind of background that feels both effortless and dynamic—a subtle pop without overwhelming the subject. And, more importantly, it feels like Santa Cruz. There’s something about the mix of beachy, weathered charm and lush greenery that captures the vibe of this town in such an understated way.
Timing was key for this session. Since this spot is in a parking lot, I scheduled it early in the morning, before Bay Photo opened, to ensure a safe, distraction-free space without cars pulling in and out. Plus, early mornings are magic for photographing kids—they’re fresh, happy, and full of energy, ready to play and be themselves.
I finally had the chance to use this spot, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Paired with a stylish, effortlessly cool family, the scene came to life in such a natural way. It’s moments like these—where a hidden corner transforms into a stunning setting—that remind me why I love what I do
